Volcanic Eruption Halts Flights

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Most air traffic in the UK is currently suspended due to a huge cloud of volcanic ash (drifting up to 20,000 feet-36,000 feet) coming from Iceland. The volcanic ash can clog the airplane engines and in turn, cause the jet engines to fail. Most air traffic in England has been banned until around 8 AM EDT Friday. Between 5,000 and 6,000 of the 21,000 flights have been canceled. Many of the US flights traveling to London had to return back to their departure cities, or to another location.

The ash is coming from a volcanic eruption that took place under Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull glacier. As stated in the article, Iceland “sits on a volcanic hot spot.” It’s the second eruption this month. About 700 people around the area are being evacuated. [SOURCE]

I sure can use some of that volcanic ash for cosmetic purposes. =-P
